Blade Runner has influenced many science fiction films, video games, anime, and television series. It brought the work of Philip K. Dick to the attention of Hollywood, and several later big-budget films were based on his work. The Wachowskis’ Matrix franchise drew from both Blade Runner (elements including replicant persecution) and Dick’s novel The Penultimate Truth.
Though set in 2019 Los Angeles, Blade Runner is a work of retrofitted futurism.[8] It contains no references to actual developments in technology expected that year; instead it focuses on problem areas that were predicted in 1982 to become worse between then and 2019 (such as overpopulation).
